Initially, in the early days, many photographers set their prices quite low and still offer a very generous and excellent package and service at that price. Local weddings can come quick and fast on these kind of deals. However, after a very short time, you will soon realise that you are treading water and not making much profit. The plus side is that you will build a great portfolio which will help in securing future work. When you realise the poor profit margins you have achieved, however, you will need to either increase prices substantially or change your packages offered overnight.
If you are going to offer a cheaper package, ensure that your costs do not run away with themselves and be aware that there are plenty of photographers happy to shoot weddings for next to nothing! Whether they are any good or not is a case to argue.
At the end of the day its not much fun running around after clients if all you can see for it is a poor profit margin. You may feel busy and successful taking on 40 weddings a year and running around like crazy but if you are only charging a pittance for each wedding, you will be very dissapointed at the end of the financial year to see that you have made next to nothing for all your hard efforts. To add to this, if you scrabble around at the lower end, you often attract the wrong type of client. Your aim should be eventually to attract the wealthier client, where you can comfortably take on say 15 weddings for a higher price.
This way, you can give of your best and earn a decent income. Some may say this is hard in these times as every man and their dog are out there trying wedding photography. On top of this, compact cameras take really decent shots now and your competition is often the guest taking photos at the wedding. However, even though times are hard in the photographic industry, you have to be clever and go for the markets where people are still willing to part good cash for wedding photographers; they are still out there believe me. You just have to be excellent at marketing yourself.
