Films are an on-screen portrayal of every day human life. While some of them deal with the real life incidences, others are written taking some imaginary thoughts in mind. Though, audience enjoys watching both genres of films, but documentary films are more appealing and are easily able to capture the minds of the people.
The emergence of documentary films can be traced back to 1895 when the Lumiere brothers shot a film. Later, with the passage of time documentary films began to spread to all countries of the world as filmmakers started to work on real life incidents. These films bring in front of the audience either a grave problem that is persisting in our society or any particular event. Documentaries are made even on many famous persons from various walks of life.
There are six types of documentaries that are made, poetic, expository, observational, participatory, reflexive and performative. Poetic Documentaries are one of the earliest forms of documentaries. In these films, content were provided in the form of static images and voiceovers, Since, it was one of the first form of documentary filmmaking, the Documentary filmmakers did not wanted to experiment much and hence used this technique to experiment. Joris Ivens Rain which was made on a summer shower in Amsterdam is a classic example of poetic documentary.
Expository Documentaries are somewhat similar to the poetic ones but there is difference between the two. In Expository documentary, the voiceover is directly targeted to the viewer unlike poetic documentary where a general voiceover is given. Here, the images are synchronized with the audio so that the viewer can understand the purpose of the film. These documentaries mainly cover historical topics like an important event which has happened in the past.
Observational Documentaries is yet another interesting genre where the film is made observing the behavior of a human being under certain circumstances. In these types of documentaries editing is not done much as the filmmaker wants to give a taste of the real life surroundings to the audience. Participatory documentaries on the other hand are a bit different. Here, the filmmaker himself participates in the film. For instance: a visit to any of the estranged island where one has to shoot himself with the camera.
In Performative documentaries such a matter is taken which is considered as a taboo in the society. They are quite sensitive and are an important matter that is neglected by the people of the society. For example films on certain groups and tribes or people of minority castes. In these kinds of films the narrator is himself or herself the subject matter of the film. The purpose of making such kind of documentary films is to spread awareness in the society.
Once, a documentary film is shot, it goes to the Film production House for editing, based on the kind of film that it is. All the unnecessary clips are properly edited and appropriately synchronized with the audio so that it is appealing both to the eyes and ears.
